Book Description:

It is now ten years since the first Handbook on Hyperbaric Medicine was published. During this time there have been many major advances: our understanding of the actions of hyperbaric oxygenation has been elucidated by several studies; clinical practice is becoming more scientific; various consensus-derived organisational and operational recommendations and guidelines are now widely accepted.

As for Europe, these positive developments are largely due to the continuous action of the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM). One of the most successful initiatives was the start of a specific European research action sponsored by the EU Co-operation in Science and Technology (COST) programme. The specific COST Action for hyperbaric medicine, COST B14, has been completed and has provided the impetus for the publication of this new Handbook.

This book is a reference document for researchers and clinicians, and is also of excellent use for both teachers and students.

Book Description:

Nuclear medicine plays a crucial role in patient care, and this book is an essential guide for all practitioners to the many techniques that inform clinical management. The first part covers the scientific basis of nuclear medicine, the rest of the book deals with clinical applications. Diagnostic imaging has an increasingly important role in patient management and, despite advances in other modalities (functional MRI and spiral CT), nuclear medicine continues to make its unique contribution by its ability to demonstrate physiological function. This book is also expanded by covering areas of development in nuclear medicine, such as PET, methods of tumor imaging, and data processing. All illustrations for this new edition reflect current standards of image quality.

This practical approach results in a book which is invaluable to the radiologist, physician, physicist, or technologist starting in nuclear medicine but also contains up-to-date advice for the most experienced practitioner.

Amazon.com:

This alternative-medicine self-help guide promises to teach you to help heal yourself and others using the body's own natural energies. Building on such diverse concepts as acupuncture and therapeutic touch, Donna Eden lays out a practical framework in Energy Medicine for flushing out and recharging the body's systems.

"This book will show you how to work with the electromagnetic and more subtle energies that give your body life," Eden writes, along with her husband, psychologist David Feinstein. "These energies form the foundation of your health."

For instance, if your head aches or feels clouded, energy may be stagnating there, so do the "crown pull" to release it. The book gives a detailed description of how to do this and other energy-fixing exercises, and provides time estimates and illustrations for doing the maneuvers.

Eden, who has practiced energy medicine for more than 20 years and has given classes around the world, also relates stories about some of her clients, including those with cancer and chronic pain. While Eden says people can help themselves and others with the techniques in the book, she urges them to seek professional care as well.

Energy Medicine includes chapters on various energy systems, ranging from the meridians to the chakras, the basic grid to the strange flows, and chapters on how such systems relate to pain and illness. It also includes an appendix listing organizations and Internet sites for other forms of alternative medicine, like naturopathy and qigong. The book is a useful guide for people interested in this form of alternative healing.

Book Description:

The first practical guide to using energy medicine to improve physical vitality, emotional health, and mental acuity.

"Even the most hard-nosed doctor will admit that some people have a healing presence that makes us--and our immune system--better than before. Donna Eden is one of those rare healers."--Gloria Steinem

World-renowned healer Donna Eden is able to literally see the body's energy keypoints and meridians. In Energy Medicine, she tells readers how they, too, can visualize these energy systems, determine the causes of physical and psychological problems based on the state of these energies, and devise highly effective treatments to remedy specific ailments and injuries. This is the only interactive guide that shows how you can work with energy to strengthen the immune, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems; alleviate pain, emotional stress, and depression; and improve memory and learning skills.

In health conferences throughout the world, Eden consistently exhilarates and amazes her audiences. Blending intuitive genius with a profound grasp of how the body functions as an energy system, Donna Eden's unique approach to energy medicine integrates Eastern, Celtic, and Western healing arts.

Book Description:

Medicine Across Cultures: The History and Practice of Medicine in Non-Western Cultures
consists of 19 essays dealing with the medical knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indian, Egyptian, and Tibetan medicine, the book includes essays on comparing Chinese and western medicine and religion and medicine. The essays address the connections between medicine and culture and relate the medical practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay is well illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both the history of medicine and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.

Description

Responding to the expansion of scientific knowledge about the roles of nutrients in human health, the Institute of Medicine has developed a new approach to establish Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and other nutrient reference values. The new title for these values Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), is the inclusive name being given to this new approach. These are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes applicable to healthy individuals in the United States and Canada. This new book is part of a series of books presenting dietary reference values for the intakes of nutrients. It establishes recommendations for energy, carbohydrate, fiber, fat, fatty acids, cholesterol, protein, and amino acids. This book presents new approaches and findings which include the following:
- The establishment of Estimated Energy Requirements at four levels of energy expenditure
- Recommendations for levels of physical activity to decrease risk of chronic disease
- The establishment of RDAs for dietary carbohydrate and protein
- The development of the definitions of Dietary Fiber, Functional Fiber, and Total Fiber
- The establishment of Adequate Intakes (AI) for Total Fiber
- The establishment of AIs for linolenic and a-linolenic acids
- Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges as a percent of energy intake for fat, carbohydrate, linolenic and a-linolenic acids, and protein
- Research recommendations for information needed to advance understanding of macronutrient requirements and the adverse effects associated with intake of higher amounts

Also detailed are recommendations for both physical activity and energy expenditure to maintain health and decrease the risk of disease.

After a short historical introduction, the text deals with the general properties of antimicrobial compounds of all kinds (antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal and antielminthic agents); laboratory aspects of antimicrobial chemotherapy (including antibiotic interactions and use of the laboratory);resitance to antimicrobial agents (including mechanismsn of resistance and the control of resistance);general principles of antibiotic usage (including pharmacokinetic issues, the prophylactic use of antibiotics, and special concerns of treatment of young children and the elderly) and the use of antimicrobial therapy in specific types of infection. There is a postcript on the development and marketing of antimicrobial agents. Reviews of previous editions: 'This reasonably priced volume is recommended without reservation for students and junior doctors, pharmacists, laboratory and other health care staff. I would also recommend it for microbiology departmental libraries.' Journal of Infection `...... well written, accomplishing the stated aims. All tables are essential to the discussion and easy to understand. American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 'The new edition retains the formula-winning layout of the first edition ... It is, to my knowledge, the only authoritative book written at this level, and it is required reading for students. Journal of Hospital Infection 'The book covers an enormous amount of material, dealing as it does with antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoan and antiviral agents. Almost every aspect is covered ... the authors have in general managed to distil into the text the essential elements of the topics and ensure that the treatment is not superficial ... this paperback edition ... is very good value for money. It can truly be considered to cover, at a basic level, "all you need to know" about antimicrobial chemotherapy and can be highly recommended for junior clinical staff, pharmacy staff and junior biomedical scientists; their more senior colleagues will also find much of value in this new edition of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.' British Journal of Biomedical Science 'This updated textbook provides young doctors and students with the fundamental principles of antimicrobial chemotherapy. This third edition has been thoroughly revised and extensively rewritten. Drugs of Today '...excellently suited for trainee nurses, pharmacists and medical laboratory science officers ... Its short, but comprehensive covering of the topic make it highly advisable for everyone looking for basic knowledge of the properties and uses of antimicrobial drugs.' Infection 'I think this is a useful reference textbook which undergraduate medical students will find beneficial in coming to grips with the principles of antimicrobial chemotherapy.' Book Description:

Each of the adult anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder) is presented in a separate chapter of this volume. As the rich description of each disorder is a prerequisite for their recognition, understanding and diagnosis, the book focuses on clinical features, psychopathology and the corresponding conceptual issues. There is also an emphasis of etiological factors, pathogenetic processes, and pharmacological and psychological treatments of each anxiety disorder, as adequate treatment depends crucially on the clinician's understanding of the origins of these conditions and the processes involved in their occurrence. The volume is guided by a practical need to present the anxiety disorders as they occur and as they are treated in the "real world." As such, this work is intended to be a state-of-the-art reference for clinical practice, aiming to balance and integrate what is currently known about anxiety disorders and their treatment. It contains descriptions of the relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, practical tips, and treatment recommendations for the commonly encountered clinical situations. The book is most useful to psychiatrists, primary care physicians, clinical psychologists, other mental health workers, and physicians in training. It is also of interest to a general audience.

Book Description:

This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder. Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it.L Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970's, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognition neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics.L Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy.

Book Description:

Asthma prevalence is increasing worldwide, and there is growing concern about the burden of asthma both for patients and for the health services. There have also been major changes in the management of asthma death in some western countries in the 1960's and again in the 1970's. Asthma epidemiology has a major role to play in investigating the causes of these global changes, and in developing preventive interventions. This is the first text on the principles and methods of asthma epidemiology. It describes the types of asthma epidemiology studies, and discusses the strengths and limitations of the various methods of measuring asthma prevalence and asthma morbidity and the major risk factors for asthma, methods of studying the causes of asthma deaths. The book will therefore be of interest not only to epidemiologists, but also to the very large number of respiratory physicians, allergist, and pediatricians who are becoming involved in asthma epidemiology.
