Book Description:

The field of endocrine disruption or endocrine active compounds (EACs), which is just emerging and still controversial, is comprehensively covered by leading experts in Volume 3, Subvolumes L (the present volume, Part I) and M (Part II). The major classes of endocrine active chemicals are discussed, as well as methods for their detection and their association with health disturbances in humans and wildlife. The etiology of several of the human diseases associated with endocrine disruptors, e.g. breast and prostate cancer, decreased fertility and malformations, is still poorly understood, and the current state of knowledge is presented. Since hormonally active agents appear to have the potential of both adverse and beneficial effects, the evidence of health benefits associated with endocrine active compounds in humans is also presented. Basic chapters on the mode of action of EACs and on the etiology of the associated diseases facilitate the understanding of this complex subject for non-medical readers.

Ultrasound for Surgeons

In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As
part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of the
most integral parts of the surgeon's clinical practice. It is not surprising to
observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because
surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for
their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis
and treatment. Furthermore, ultrasound equipment is compact, affordable
and user-friendly so that extensive training is not required to master
focused ultrasound techniques. Cost containment initiatives by patients,
clinicians and third-party payers have encouraged the use of modalities, such
as ultrasound, that save time and money. Considering the unique qualities
of ultrasound...noninvasive, portable, rapid and easily repeatable..., ultrasound
is especially suitable to the surgeon's practice. The FAST has replaced
central venous pressure measurements for the detection of hemopericardium
and diagnostic peritoneal lavage for the detection of hemoperitoneum. Bedside
ultrasound detects a pleural effusion so well in critically ill patients that fewer
lateral decubutis X-rays are ordered. Ultrasound directed biopsy of breast
lesions is a common office procedure. Laparoscopic ultrasound allows for
tumor staging without formal celiotomy while ultrasound is an adjunct to
many hepatic and pancreatic procedures. Endoscopic and endorectal ultrasound
have added a new dimension to the assessment and treatment of many
gastrointestinal lesions. Color-flow duplex imaging and endoluminal ultrasound
have significantly expanded the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of
vascular imaging.

Hepatobiliary Surgery

Hepatobiliary Surgery is a technical manual and not a textbook. Although
some chapters are robust in their discussion of anatomic and physiologic
detail, others are written in a purely "how to" style. At its core, the book is
written as a reference and guidebook for practicing surgeons, gastroenterologists,
and interventional radiologists with an interest in hepatobiliary diseases.
However, we believe it will also be of great value to medical students
on surgery clerkships, general surgery residents, and surgical oncology fellows
as they pursue excellence in their education and training.
Mastery of hepatobiliary surgery requires one to not only be an accomplished
surgical craftsman, but also a competent internist, knowledgeable
gastroenterology collaborator, and skilled interpreter of radiologic images.
No one medical discipline has a patent on knowledge and opinion, and
most complex hepatobiliary problems are best managed by securing the opinion
of experts in all disciplines before embarking on a treatment plan. This
book attempts to parallel that dialogue by collating the expertise, experience
and opinion of all of these disciplines and distilling it down into one volume.
Please note, this book is not gospel about how unique patients should
be managed, nor does it claim to present the only way in which various
operative procedures and interventions can be performed. Rather, this book
presents a strategy that works for us and can hopefully be utilized to enhance
your practice and the care of your patients.

Publisher: Springer
Publication Date: 2006-10-04
ISBN / ASIN: 1846281598

Book Description:
A compendium written by world leaders in laparoscopic urology from various teaching urological institutions in the US and UK who have contributed their tips and tricks in performing the various urologic procedures.
Each topic is limited to a few pages to produce a small and easy-to-read book. The book is extensively illustrated with line diagrams which are self-explanatory and greatly enhance the understanding various techniques, such as position of laparoscopic ports or technique of throwing a laparoscopic stitch.
Essential for urology residents, fellows, and practicing urologists, the book provides information that will be extremely useful in the performance of routine and advanced laparoscopic surgery, as well as when particular situations or difficult moments are encountered during surgery. While many journal articles may outline one author's preference for a certain technique or trick, until now, there has been no compilation of the techniques of several authors. This handbook of tips and tricks from multiple specialists will be invaluable to residents and urologists already practicing laparoscopy.

Pediatric Neurosurgery

Medical students and residents are often asked for a recommendation
of a pocket-sized pediatric neurosurgery text. We are delighted to be
offered the opportunity to help construct such a volume. The goal of this
work on this project is to provide a means, through the contributions of our
many collaborating authors, to become comfortable with the common problems
of pediatric neurosurgery in a single accessible book. hope that this
work will reflect well on our specialty and may,
perhaps, inspire an occasional student to delve a bit more deeply into a topic
of interest. We look forward to recommending this volume to students
and residents.

Book Description:

Cases of viral foodborne outbreaks are on the rise in part due to the increases in population, scarcity of clean water, and changes in eating habits. Outbreaks attributed to toxic, fungal, parasitic, and bacterial agents are very well known and characterized because we have known about these diseases for a long time and have developed appropriate methods to investigate and track them. Detection methods to investigate and track viral agents in food, with the exception of shellfish, have only recently begun to be developed. However, with the advent of molecular diagnostic methods, the role of viruses in foodborne disease outbreaks is beginning to be understood.

Viruses in Foods is the first book that comprehensively discusses the role of viruses in foodborne disease outbreaks, along with strategies for the prevention and control of viral contamination of food.

Universities and Science in the Early Modern Period (Archimedes, Volume 12)

Universities and Science in the Early Modern Period
(Archimedes, Volume 12)
Mordechai Feingold (Editor), Victor Navarro-Brotons (Editor)
Book Description
user posted image

The past two decades have witnessed a striking re evaluation of early modern institutions of higher learning as impoverished intellectual centers, hostile to new
modes of thought. The present volume offers the most comprehensive synthesis to date of the fecundity of early modern universities, their receptivity to novel scientific ideas, and their contribution to the critical dialogue that vitalized the emergent European scientific community. The "soul" of the early modern university was its well-rounded, humanistically informed curriculum and the culture of erudition it inculcated. The authors of this volume offer a fresh assessment of how this course of study affected generations of natural philosophers, from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia, from Italy to Scotland, even as it was increasingly modified to accommodate the new science. The fresh evidence gathered here emphasizes just how rigorously science was pursued by academics, notwithstanding institutional constraints.
Individually, each paper illustrates the nexus of complexities specific locales made on the reception and transmission of scientific ideas; collectively, the papers offer a comparative framework that should prove invaluable in our evaluating the profound changes undergone by early modern universities during the era of Scientific Revolution.

Violence in Schools: Cross-National and Cross-Cultural Perspectives

Violence in Schools: Cross-National and Cross-Cultural Perspectives
Editors: Florence Denmark, Herbert Krauss, Robert Wesner, Elizabeth Midlarsky and Uwe Gielen

user posted image
Book Description
During the 1940s, teachers were certain they had some grievous complaints about
students' behavior in school. Among these were excessive noise, littering, and gum chewing. More recently, teachers' concerns have taken on a far more dire tone. Today, their focus is on the rape, robbery, and substance abuse incidents that occur in
alarming numbers in their workplaces.
In recent years, the news on violent crime in our schools has often been devastating.
And although school officials have begun taking measures to decrease the level of
violence on their grounds (e.g., installing metal detectors, hiring guards to patrol
hallways), the violence that continues to occur is often more lethal and no less
troubling. To further understand and ameliorate the causes of violence among our
children—especially at school—this book takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues.
Violence in Schools: Cross-National and Cross-Cultural Perspectives provides both a broad overview of violence in schools and offers specific descriptions of models that have been used successfully within school settings to prevent violent crime from occurring. For example, this volume: Recognizes that violence on school grounds is a global problem that requires an international perspective to counteract.
Takes a broad view of what constitutes violence—that is, the focus is not only on
physical assault, but the neglect and abusive behavior (e.g., racism, sexism, cultural discrimination and suppression) that contribute to its occurrence.
Explores the history of the phenomenon of school violence in order to effectively ameliorate its current condition.
Violence in Schools: Cross-National and Cross-Cultural Perspectives speaks with
legitimate authority to scholars as well as to those on the frontlines in combating
school violence, including school and counseling psychologists, school administrators, teachers and staff as well as concerned parents.
