Good... but not great

I bought this book at the beginning of my 3rd year medicine rotation and used it for several weeks. It was good... but I did not find the layout and algorithms to be user friendly. It has the information.. but I found myself searching in various sections to find what I needed many a time. Overall a good book, but having experimented with others for my other medicine and family medicine rotations, I would recc that you peruse through either Medicine Recall, Consult Manual of Internal Medicine, &/or Pocket Medicine. All are great... and have different styles. Its simply a matter of personal preferance.

Professor Frayn did an awesome job to discuss & present a subject as dry as the human metabolism in a way which is easily accesible not only to biologists and medical doctors, but to educated layman as well.

The approach taken by the book is fully integrative, and discuss human metabolism in context of human physiology. This is what sets this book apart!! Its not yet another biochemistry text which study the metabolic pathways , its so much more.

Personal trainers , athletes , individuals interested in human performance and sport physiology will find this book very atractive and usefull in understanding key concepts of metabolism and metabolic pathways, organism repsonse to various nutritional plans, extremes like starvation & the metabolic changes during intense physical exercise. This text is a primer on the care of the patient with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, for nurses who may not have experience in this demanding speciality. Aging has long since been ascribed to the gradual accumulation of DNA mutations in the genome of somatic cells. However, it is only recently that the necessary sophisticated technology has been developed to begin testing this theory and its consequences. Vijg critically reviews the concept of genomic instability as a possible universal cause of aging in the context of a new, holistic understanding of genome functioning in complex organisms resulting from recent advances in functional genomics and systems biology. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of current research, as well as a look ahead to the design of strategies to retard or reverse the deleterious effects of aging. This is particularly important in a time when we are urgently trying to unravel the genetic component of aging-related diseases. Moreover, there is a growing public recognition of the imperative of understanding more about the underlying biology of aging, driven by continuing demographic change.
